Hi everyone,
A number of users have reported having issues with uploading images to a post via the "manage attachments" option. Most of the feedback I have received has been along the lines of exceeding allowed uploading space. I didn't know this was possible until I logged into one of the member's accounts here (you know who you are ). By that, I mean I knew technically it was possible but in all my time administering online communities, I've never seen this happen. ![]() Here's the issue: Every user has a maximum allotment of 10 Megabytes for uploading attachments. In actual bytes, this number is 10485760. That is huge considering the average image uploaded is only 20 or so bytes. You fine folks have manage to exceed this abundantly. ![]() When I logged into the member's account, she had over 790 attachments uploaded with a total of almost 60 Megabytes. YIKES. ![]() How to get around this issue: We cannot increase the allotted space for attachments for users anymore than it is set at. With that in mind, here are a couple of options: 1. Delete as many of your old attachments as possible if you don't need them here. This is a good option for attachments uploaded years ago. Chances are, they are not be viewed as often. If you have exceeded your allotted space, you will be brought to a list of all your attachments every time you try to upload using the manage attachment feature. This is where you can delete your old attachments. 2. Use the "Insert Image" option for posting images in threads. This means you will have to have all your images hosted on the internet somewhere. I'm told that Photobucket or Flickr provide oodles of storage space for no cost. Again, this isn't to say that you cannot use the manage attachment feature to upload images directly from your PC. It's just that if you go over the 10 MB allotment, you will have to use option 1 or 2 above to rectify this issue. Hope this helps. Yung

IF like you say we are only alloted 10 MB for uploading attachments, how come I can still upload ? It says "Sum of all attachments owned by MalteseJane 16.25 MB.
Maybe I understand this wrong. Does the 10 MB mean the limit for one upload or the limit over a period of time ? If it's over a period of time, I should not be able to upload anymore. And I understand the frustration of other people if this is the case. I did not post many pictures and reached 16.25 MB.

I deleted all my pictures from 2005. I still have 174 uploaded attachments for a total of 15.76 MB and I am not a big picture poster.

Oh dear...this could be a problem. I just checked and I'm already 3/4 full. And I really hate deleting old pics. There are so many times when I do a search to find a specific older picture. I hope people will use photobucket so they don't have to delete old pictures.

I have 64MB, with 1,034 uploaded attachments.
10MB sure doesn't seem like much. I'll have to delete 60% of my pics. I'll try the photobucket instead, as I often look back on my threads of Henry, Lulu, Sammie, Bianca, my fosters when they arrived, then again when they are adopted. SM has been like a diary for me. And I'm sure even by deleting the pics I don't want, that still won't make enough space. Most times it's not only the pics, it's the stories behind them.

ok, this is the issue I was having, but I did not see this thread ahead of time. I clearly post LOADS more photos than the typical SM user, and in order to post any new pix, I will have to delete football fields of pictures. I too am saddened by this, since I hate deleting photos, and I often go back and view old photos of mine for one reason or another. As I was trying to post a picture thread tonight, I went ahead and started deleting pictures, not really realizing what I was doing. Now all of my most recent posts are photo-less. Bummer.
Sadly, this will very likely keep me from sharing many photos in the forum in the future, which is one of my favorite things to do. Of course I understand there must be a limit on space taken up. I'm just saying it's going to completely change the way I use SM, and this makes me very sad. I won't be going back to using photobucket, as the process is a major production. Sorry, don't mean to be negative ... I'm just super-duper-bummed. I just double-checked ... I'm at 140 MB. It's late and I'm tired, so I don't know if I'm doing the math right ... but does that mean I have to delete over 90% of my photos before I can even add one new one?

This is very sad,
as SM has always been a very picture friendly community and I too love to go back looking at old pictures all the time. I really hate to go back to old threads and delete them especially since we have lost the ability to edit these old threads as we once had unlimited. So it isn't like we can go to these old threads and put a smaller version in or put a linked version in there instead. I hate to be one of those people whining about changes, but this is one of the reasons many of us loved the "old" SM. It was one of my "fears" with the change over to vbulliten that favorite features like this would be lost. Uploading images was one of the major perks of paid membership over on the old SM. Frankly, other than feeling like I was helping out Joe and the SM community it was the main reason I paid. I asked in another thread what the benefits are to paid memberships now. If even paid members do not have unlimited uploads, I again want to ask the point of paying vertical scope to belong to SM? |

I am way over my alloted amount and I have posted 90% of my pics using photobucket for the past few years. I cannot believe that I'm so far over my limit (66mb) There is no way around this??? I dont' want to delete pics, Like Deb I go back and use sm as a diary of sorts and with how frequently I go through computers, I like having them on SM, otherwise I would have lost a ton!

It's gonna kill me to delete all those pictures.....I don't know where they're stored on my personal back up cd's anymore. It's gonna be a big sad job, like cleaning out your desk when you've been laid off. I've often looked up those pictures and re-used them.
