Default Can these be 'tweaked'?

Ok...so I see that you guys are working on trying to give us more space for pics and already fixed the number of characters in the PM's. Thanks! So...what about these things?

1) Can we take away the 60 minute time limit on editing? So often in the health section especially, it's the way we show there is an update in that thread.

2) When posting pictures, often times we tell a little story with captions that go along with each picture. The way it works right now, we don't have the option of where we place the photo's in the body of the post and we can't write little commentaries with each one. Can we get that back?

3) Can we have the Member Search function back? Often when I wanted to PM someone who wasn't on my Friends List, I would search for them with Member Search so I could PM them.

4) And can we have the 'Upcoming Events' back? It now shows if there is something like a birthday today, but I always liked knowing whose birthday or 'gotcha day' was coming up.

I truly appreciate all the work you are doing. I'm sure this is not a fun time for you right now.

LOL -- Crystal, thanks for the feedback. I have to go at them one at a time.

Regarding point #1:

Now that I have extended the edit time for thread titles, you can make updates this way: Post your update in the thread as usual and then post in the title the update post # as follows: "Update post #10". That should take care of that issue.

I apologize but the issue of having a limit on editing times is for keeping the integrity of the content on this site more than anything else. I know that we can make typos here and there and if that is really a concern for a user, they can always contact Joe or myself if the edit time has passed and we'll be glad to make a quick edit.

If it's a matter of adding content or changing content to a post after it has been posted, the user should just make ad additional post.

#2 is not doable as this is a tech issue that is not built into vBulletin. A user mentioned this to me via PM after reading this post:

If people have posts that have captions, they will need to use Photobucket. I can't think of another solution myself except of course, not having thumbnails!

However, I think everyone agrees that the thumbnails are just splendid.

Point #3:

The Members List is not coming back. Sorry. It is there for the protection of the community from unwanted spam.

If it helps, you can search for a member via the search function.

1. In the main navigation menu, click on search. A drop down box should appear.

2. Click on "Advanced Search."

3. In the field "Search by User Name" (which is the first field on the right side), begin to type in the first few letters of a member's name and a list of all names beginning with those letters should populate.

I know this might not be the perfect solution but hopefully it helps a bit.

Point #4:

I need more details about this. Not sure what this was and where it appeared.

What is the time limit for editing posts now? I don't think it was ever a problem before, the site integrity was maintained, so I would really like it if it could go back to what it was. It is one of the reasons why i loved my paid membership.

Really, the biggest need that I see is for updates. So when you say "post in the title the update post # as follows: "Update post #10", as far as I can tell it will not show in the main subject title but just above my new reply. I'm just wondering how people will know at a glance there is an update. Some of the threads on health issues can get really long and be active for over a few weeks. It's so much easier to see the update post # in the main title rather then having to scroll through all the replies.

Could we possibly have a font color change option for the titles of replies that we would know to only use for updates to the original post? Just something to make it stick out more?

lol...ok...so when you use photobucket, you can then type text in between the pictures? I haven't tried using photobucket yet with this new format.

I so love to tell little stories with my pics...but then again, maybe others don't and now we know the true reason for the whole conversion. My picture stories.

Actually, I don't think that will be a problem at all now that I know how to do it that way. I always hated it when I saw that a spammer had been in my profile so I'm glad for the extra protection.

It was right under the section that said what today's events were, in the same format. Just one or two lines. I suppose if I got really organized, I wouldn't need the head's up on upcoming birthdays and events.

Crystal,

As a follow up to your concerns regarding my suggestion for point #1, I created this tutorial. In short, if you do it this way, the thread title you want everyone to see will appear everywhere on the forums (as if it was the original thread title).

Tutorial on Editing Thread Title

I have to agree. I know that with the conversion some things will have to be changed, but as a community I think we found the feature of being able to go back and edit threads was by far more helpful than it ever was problematic. While I do not discount that some issues could come up from this ability, it was often more a very useful tool and frankly having the choice about what you want to leave of your own words out there online is a major element in why I felt safe on SM. It is not like we had the power to edit everyone, we simply appreciated having the ability to edit ourselves.

Edited to add that I would think the moderators would appreciate that we might come back and choose our words more carefully or not have to contact them every time we disliked the way we phrased something. I know in my online classes that I teach, I let my students come back and edit themselves freely as I see it as a part of their ability to engage in "free and open discourse."
