Last year my daughter played on a travelling soccer team. We all stayed in the same hotel for a tournament last June. The coach's wife was upset b/c she found a dead bug in the toilet and a hair in the tub. Our room was completely fine. It's not the Ritz, but it did the job. We only sleep there and perhaps swim for a bit. The pool was fine. Continental breakfast was great. Waffles, english muffins, cereal, fresh fruit, etc.
Fast forward to this year. We're making hotel reservations. The coach's wife chose another hotel. It's a bit nicer..but nothing fancy. It's in the same area as last year's. The difference? It's $20 a night MORE and you get 2 double beds instead of 2 queens that we had at last year's hotel. I haven't told Molly yet, but I think she's going to be disappointed but it appears we might be doing another tournament that next weekend on the north side and will need to book a hotel stay again. $40 total is a big difference...that could pay for our food..so we are likely booking the other hotel, the one different from the coach (and her friend) The coach's wife is an admitted germ-phobe. I..on the other hand..am not. For me, flush the toilet..bug is gone. It wasn't a huge bug. Bugs happen. the hair could have been from the maid's head for all we know. Soooo what do I do? |

Book the other place!
Coach's wives don't get a vote in my opinion - the parents get the vote. $40 is serious money, when you count in gas, food and everything else that goes with it.

Ohhh..we can stay wherever we want...I just know Molly is going to be bummed b/c we aren't in the same hotel as her friend...(coach's daughter). I just wanted to see if you all thought $40 was a big difference like I did.

I agree its your vote, not the coach's wifes decision on this matter. Does she also have a child on this team or just the Coach's wife? |

I have two different opinions, lol.
I am a germaphobe when it comes to hotels -- I can hardly bring myself to sleep in their bedding (I actually used to bring my own comforter & pillow), so if I found a hair in the bathtub and/or bug in the toilet, I would have complained and asked someone to re-clean the room. Would I have stayed there again on another trip? Probably not. BUT, $40 is a lot of extra money for your hotel room when, like you said, that alone could cover your food cost. If I were in that situation, I would have to stay at a different hotel most likely. If the cost is the actual issue and will affect your budget/make things tight, definitely go with your gut and get your own hotel. Your daughter will be upset most likely but if all you do is sleep there, it won't affect her ability to hang out with the team.

Im not a bug lover and yes im a bit of a clean freak but a bug wouldnt bother me, like u said...bugs happen! Sounds like the wife is just a bit of a drama queen. I think $40 is a big difference too and yep i would def just book into the last place you stayed. So long as the beds were clean and the food good theres no problem lol

I think I would stay there one time (more costly place) and while there, check around and see if I can find something nicer than the hair in the tub place (eeeewwwwww
) but less costly and mention is to coach's wife. It is a big price bump if it is recurring...mabye she will be open minded to a less expensive place she feels is cleaner. We stayed in a hotel in Hawaii that had the hair in the drain thing and I moved. I'm not a free wheeler with my money, but that just grosses me out. You start wondering if they're changing the sheets, etc. Bad housekeeping is a deal breaker for me...with so many strangers rolling through, I just want to think someone is trying to disinfect/sanitize at the very least *blech* *looking for kleenex boxes to use as slippers hahaha* << Howard Hughes-eque

Before kids I traveled a LOT (mostly for work, some leisure) and NEVER saw any bugs or hairs, etc. Never had a bad experience. So that kind of leads me to wonder about the cleanliness of the bug place. Could be a coincidence, could be that the place is infested. And with the nation-wide problem with hotels and bedbugs these days, I'd definitely err on the side of being overly cautious. So....If it were me I'd pay the $40--place is cleaner, kids are together and happy, etc. JMO!
