Attacking an Owl in my yard! I have a huge Palo Verde tree in the backyard, and I always scan it for big birds who would look at my Khloee and think its dinner time! Most of the time, there is nothing, so imagine my surprise when I saw an owl in my tree!
He was hard to spot since he blended in with the bark, but I saw that sucker! He was small, but I don't want 1 small owl to escalate to even bigger owls or encourage other birds of prey. In fact, my co-worker had an unfortunate event where a horned owl swooped her fur baby up ![]() I started with a ladder and broom, but it was still too high up. So I got the hose and water gun and went kamikaze spraying that owl until he flew out of my yard! He was stubborn, but 15 minutes and my neighbors crazy looks later...all gone! Khloee ran inside and watched me from the back door the entire time; I think she thought Mommy had lost it lol! |

The owl wasn't injured, just discouraged from staying put. There is plenty of disease-ridden vermin that the owl can and should eat, but taking one of our sweet babies is not allowed!

We are protective mommas! The amazing thing is I think Khloee sensed the owl. Usually Khloee LOVES being outside and I can't open the door fast enough. But when I opened the door, she just sat there and looked at me which led me to investigate.
They really are so smart and intuitive! |

It is good that you are a protective mommy, but honestly, I think it would be better if you tempered your instinct with intelligence. I happen to love birds. I love owls. I know the different species of owls, and I know that only great-horned owls are a threat. There are so many species of absolutely adorable small owls that pose zero threat. Driving them off with a hose in the middle of the day, when they are ill equipped to move was actually very cruel. I know that many people just kill or threaten animals who pose no threat out of fear and ignorance, but I don't applaud such behavior. Human beings excuse terrible behavior towards dogs, saying that they are just animals to be used as humans see fit. We who love dogs condemn that behavior. Yet, we fail to recognize that all animals are special creatures. Owls are magnificent creatures, beautiful creatures with a place in nature. Why would you feel threatened by a small owl....NO it will not attract great horned owls, more likely it would keep them away.
Since you live in a state that has a special wealth of avian life, I humbly suggest that you get a book and learn what wonderful creatures are in your own back yard.
