Hello, Im new. Does he look Purebred to you? - Maltese Dogs Forum : Spoiled Maltese Forums

This is my dog Paddington. I gave several pictures of different angles to show different features of him. If hes not purebred maltese, what is he mixed with? He is 23.5lbs, not overweight. He has a non-shedding single straight silky coat, no undercoat. When i take pictures with flash the hair shines brightly, and its cool to the touch. His muzzle is as long as his skull is wide. He has low set ears. Only things that dont match up is he is 17 inches long from base of neck to base of tail and he is 14 inches tall at the shoulder, and also his tail doesnt curl over.

Could he be a purebred that was bred badly and so became all wierd and super huge? His hair only gets slightly curly and coarse when wet but it brushes out straight and silky and normally has no curls at all.

He's so cute but too big to be a pure bred maltese. I think so anyway.
I'd say he definitely has maltese in him though.

Welcome to SM!

I've never heard of a Maltese that big before. I'm pretty new here myself and just got my first Malt a couple of months ago, so I'm not the best at telling you what I think. There are people here who have lots of experience and I'm sure it won't be long before one will see this post and tell you what they think. I do know you can get DNA tests that will tell you what breeds if you really want to know. I wonder if he is mixed with poodle or bichon. He's a cutie though!!

If you hadn't mentioned the weight, I would have declared that he was a full Malt without a question. The weight does seem to be too high though. He is beyond adorable!

I wonder if he also has Havanese in him, all i know is that he is 100% adorable.

I don't know for certain, but it is my opinion, or belief that some pure bred Malts get too big. Then when bred to another they get even bigger. I may not have my facts straight, but I think that there are a lot of variations occurring in pure bred dogs. Show breeders will only breed dogs that conform to the standard, but even generations of dogs that conform to the standard will throw many pups that do not. If those pups are bred we see greater deviation from the standard.

Yet, they can be healthy, beautiful little love bugs. Paddington is a love bug. He is probably pure Malt...just from home breeders who loved their kids, but didn't feel the need to conform to the standard.

Bottom line....he is your baby...he is adorable...you will love him, have him neutered and give him a good life.

I love the name Paddington

The expression he has in the second photo looks a lot like my Gussy's face

I'd guess he is a Maltese x Cocker Spaniel ... Gus is thought to be a Poodle Cocker Spaniel mix.

He looks an awful lot like the Havanese a friend of the family has... he's such a cute boy. Welcome to SM.
