Good luck! I adopted a rescue from an agency in Georgia (maltese, possibly a shih tzu mix) and it was the best decision of my life. If you don't find anything in shelters/agencies near you in NYC, look at the ones in the South. There are so many dogs in the South that need loving homes too.

Keep us updated!

I have a mix - we believe she is Maltese-shih tzu - that I adopted through a rescue; OK, I failed foster. She is the pup on the right side in my signature and is the most wonderful dog I have ever known.

I would encourage you to look for a mix at various rescues and shelters. Wonderful things happen when you save a fluff's life that way!

Good for you!

Here are a couple of great websites for rescues in your area:

Pet Adoption - Search dogs or cats near you. Adopt a Pet Today. Pictures of dogs and cats who need a home. Search by breed, age, size and color. Adopt a dog, Adopt a cat.

Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder

I found a couple Maltese/Poodle mixes in NYC:

Petfinder Adoptable Dog | Maltese | New York, NY | Muneca

Petfinder Adoptable Dog | Poodle | New York, NY | Penelope

My rescue, Lisa, is believed to be a Maltese mixed with either Shih-Tzu or Chihauhau (she's the one with 1 eye) and our other rescue, Ozzie, is a purebred Maltese that we adopted through a Yorkie rescue group, he had been given up by breeders, he was a stud dog.

I actually didn't realize that these designer breeds were nothing but cash cows... I actually had a former "friend" angrily post on my FB after I posted a picture of a gas chamber used by shelters to 'euthanize' that he went through a reputable breeder to get his goldendoodle... I should have called him out on that. "Oodle" and "Poo" breeds are SOOO popular because they are cute, and people don't realize that they come from irresponsible breeders

I checked all dogs near NY and mostly I noticed pit bulls. It's sad that ppl buy this dog because they r so popular right now and give up on them.
I found one in Staten Island. She is 10 years old thou, but I can't stop thinking about her

Try this rescue website.Shih Tzus & Furbabies - Available Dogs Archive They have a lot of small breed dogs including Maltese mixes. Worth it to send in an application. They do home visits.
There also Metropolitan Maltese Rescue in NYC too.
