Hi! I'm Laura, recent college grad, and I just adopted my first Maltese, Jack. I've had Samoyeds all my life (50lb sled dogs, one at a time), and never expected to get a Maltese... until my family and I went to the local shelter last month and we fell in love with my little man. Our current Sammy, Timmy, is getting on in years, and we wanted to get a second dog to give him a younger playmate, and to be a companion for me.
Jack is somewhere around 3-6 years old. The people at the shelter guessed he'd been on the streets for at least a year, based on his coat and teeth. His hair was so badly matted; two of his legs were matted to his body, as was his tail, so he could barely walk when he was caught and brought in to the shelter. They had to cut most of his coat off, in some places almost down to the skin. He looks SO scraggly, the poor boy. When we visited the shelter, he almost leaped into my arms, snuggled down into my chest, and wouldn't let go. We were warned that he was a "problem dog" because he was constantly barking and crying, so they were looking for an experienced dog owner to prevent him from "boomeranging." Our Timmy is a rescue from the same shelter, and he's the reason they ended up sending Jack home with us a week later. Problem dog? Noisy? You've got to be kidding me! He's been an incredibly quiet pup except when crated and left alone, and his separation anxiety is coming along fast. He's incredibly sweet and snuggly and playful, no behavior issues at all. We're having to housetrain him, but he's learning quickly. His coat is starting to grow in, so we may be able to get a passable puppy cut in a few more weeks. I've been lurking around here since we applied to adopt him, learning as much as I can. You all have been incredibly helpful so far, and I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can to take care of my new pal. |

Welcome to SM!
Hooray for Jack! He sounds like a wonderful little guy. I can't imagine such a little dog being all alone on the streets for so long. He must be so happy to have a home. It sounds like all he wants is some love! How are he and Timmy hitting it off? We would love to see pictures!

Congratulations to both you and Jack! You were obviously meant for each other, and he knew it the moment he saw you! Did you say how long you have had him? He might "blossom" a little more as you have him longer. It took my Lucy at least 6 weeks to really show us her personality. He was probably crying all the time at the shelter because he was wondering what was taking you so long to find him! Very happy for your family--you're in for a great learning experience. Maltese are just such loving little dogs, I'm continually amazed after a little less than a year with one in my home.

Welcome, Laura, Jack, and Timmy! Our family has always rescued dogs, but when I was a kid around 9 years old, I dreamed of owning a Samoyed. I still think they're one of the most magnificent breeds.
Look forward to seeing more of you on SM
