All previous advice given is excellent. I just want to wish you luck and please keep us posted. It sounds like you are being careful and thoughtful in your decision making process. If you do take the baby, you will find a wealth of information about the breed and lots of support and friendship here.

My Cassie was also from a puppy mill and lived 17 years with very little health issues. However, this needs to be looked at as a rescue. Some turn out great like Cassie but some have major health issues. That probably wouldn't stop me I adopted a JRT with major issues he lived 5 years and I still don't regret his short life. He was a joy.

I'm waiting for the latest news. I just want to say that no puppy mill would take back a dog or insist on approving a transfer in ownership. PA may be home to a lot of puppy mills, but there are also some top notch show breeders there. I know, my MiMi comes from PA.

I know I'm against puppy mills and pet store puppies.
To be honest - a pet store puppy is a FORTUNE to begin with...so I doubt if this was a "cheap" puppy that it came from one, but probably came directly from a broker or a miller. With that said..... At this point I would take the puppy. The breeder taking it back.... most won't (brokers/millers). And so you may never hear back from them. Your friend will have to find another home for the puppy.... I'd take the puppy and give it the best life you can. Get insurance on it the day you get that puppy, and take him into a vet and have them document that the puppy is in good health, have his knees documented as good, etc. When I signed Grace up the day we got her the lady who did it told me to do that - to take her in that next day and have all of that documented so future claims would be covered. Let us know how it goes....

I think it is great this person is willing to give you the puppy, knowing you'll give it a good home, rather than do what other schmucks do and try to sell it on Craigslist. I have no doubt this puppy came from a puppy mill so no worries on transfer of ownership. I'd take it, and as others have said, get insurance asap and a check up. I know we talk alot about health issues will mill puppies, but please understand that does not mean all mill puppies are guaranteed to have health problems. Please check back in and let us know what you decide!!
