Default Diamond's anal gland saga continues :(

Unfortunately our little Diamond is not doing as well as we had hoped. Despite Diamond having a cone on her, she was able to lick her wound. I am not home during the day and I was unable to monitor Diamond. The licking wasn't too bad at first, but as the week wore on, and the scabbing began, Diamond's licking was pretty intense. In fact, she was so adamant about getting to her wound that a few mornings ago I woke up to see blood on her neck. She had reached around so much that her cone cut her.

I immediately stopped using the cone and made an appointment with the vet . Diamond's wound did not seem to be healing correctly despite antibiotics and my best monitoring skills.

The vet told us Diamond's injury had absessed. She had to squeeze it out (I watched as they did this to support Diamond, it was a pretty horrifying sight). The vet flushed Diamond's wound and injected a few things in there to stop any infection.

We continued with Diamond's orbax (something) antibiotic for another 2 weeks.
I also proceeded to purchase 2 dog diapers (fabric) to stop diamond's licking. Unfortunately, I think she is able to somehow push the elastics down with her tongue and lick her wounds.

The vet attended a conference yesturday, and one of the speakers was Dr. Weese, the MRSA expert here in Canada.

My vet showed Weese diamond's file and he said that perhaps Diamond may have become resistant to the orbax antibiotic, which is why she may have not healed properly.

the next step may be that Diamond will have to take a liquid antibiotic that has side effects such as suppressing appetite etc.

I just feel so sad right now for Diamond. When I was in the room with her and she screamed when the vet took the absess out, my heart sank and I had to stop myself from crying.

I understand now when mothers feel and react worse to their child's injury than the child himself.

I really want Diamond to get better.

I'm so sorry about this. I thought Diamond was on the road to recovery. How fortuitous to have a MRSA conference though and an expert on hand. Trying to figure out how you can get your little determined girl not to lick her abscess. Is there anyone you know who would be willing to pet sit while you're away at work so that they can keep an eye on her and distract her? This would just be short term, I'd assume, a few days to a week but maybe that could work so she could finally heal. And hopefully the other antibiotic will do the trick, as that happens to us humans as well, and once it's over she's just continue to get better. Wish this wasn't happening but just trying to think of alternatives. Good luck and let us know how she does.

There is an inflatable thing that you can get to put on his neck where he cannot turn it. It won't dig into him like that hard plastic. You must use something.....There was a website but I don't remember the name.....Try to google it........Maybe they can send it overnight. I will say prayers for your sweet baby......Diapers will probably make the germs multiply.

I found it..........

Poor Diamond

Looks like you've gotten some good ideas: the inflatable collar and possible pet sitter. I feel so sorry she (and you) have to go through all this. Sending prayers your way.

I'm so sorry to hear Diamond is not healing quickly and properly. I know some members here have used baby onesies after a spay, maybe that would work on Diamond? Poor thing, isn't it awful to see our babies in pain?

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and suggestions. I will see if I can get the inflatable collar tomorrow. Thanks Dianne for finding the link for me!

I will try to go somewhere open 24 hrs tonight and get a onesie for her to try out.

the vet told me the diaper was okay, but I was hesitant about it because of the germ thing as well. I figured any protection was better than none at all.....I hope.

I will keep everyone posted on Diamond's progress.

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear this. I hope it heals quickly.

I was just in Petco about two weeks ago, and I swear I saw some kind of new cone thing in there. Maybe call them and see if they can tell you what it is. Maybe once you get the name of it you can Google it.
