Can anyone tell me what the correct weight is for a Maltese? Chouchou is 5 years old, has been spayed & weighs just over 10lbs. She was 11lbs & the vet said she was too fat & she would get arthritis when older so put her on a strict diet. She has lost some & is on special low calorie food but is always scraping in her bowl as if she is starving & I just feel so guilty & don't know what to do. I read on the internet that a Maltese should weigh about 7lbs. Anyone got any ideas please. Thank you

They say the standard is 5 - 7 lbs but there are some on here that weigh more than that. Pipper is just over a year and he weighs just over 12 lbs. And he's not chubby, just very sturdy and solid.

You need to look at her individual body.

If you can feel her ribs when you run your hands on her sides, and notice a dip up where her ribs end, she is okay.

If you can't... then she probably is a little overweight.
