Default Lulu's Surgery Tomorrow

Hi everyone,

A lot has happened since my last post. Last Monday I took Lulu back to the vet because she wasn't getting any better. I wanted the vet to watch her walk, examine her neck, take another look at her X-rays, and perhaps give us a referral to a neurologist and, that's what she did.

She made us an appointment for Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving) with a neurologist who's just an hour away. He took another X-ray, asked some questions and knew immediately what's wrong with Lulu. She has a rare birth defect in which her cervical spine is missing a part called the "dens" which normally connects C-1 & C-2. It's called atlantoaxial instability. C-2 is dislocated, compressing the spinal cord and causing paralysis.

Lulu's only hope is surgery to decompress the cord and stabilize her spine. Otherwise, he said, she's a little time bomb. Jumping the wrong way or a little bump on the head could kill her instantly. The surgery is risky because of her size and it's the trickiest surgery he does, he said, but if she makes it through the surgery, her prognosis will be very good. She won't regain the coordination she has lost, but she won't get any worse and the threat to her life will be gone. If all goes well, she'll stay at the vet hospital two nights and she'll be in a neck brace for 8 weeks.

We need your prayers and positive thoughts tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks so much.

OH my, we'll all be praying for her and you too. I hope she will be ok soon. I know how you fee......
I broke my neck in a car accident and didn't know it for almost a week. The C-2 was broken, but it wasn't displaced, so they didn't find it by traditional xrays. They did a slicedown CT scan ...I was in a lot of pain, that's how they caught it. I had to wait until the next day for them to stabilize it,scariest night of my life...
All that time, one fall ,or one move the wrong way...

Jane - I'll be thinking of, and praying for little Lulu. I'm so glad you got her to a neurologist and though it's scary for her to undergo surgery, it's scarier to see her go downhill and possibly have a fatal event. Please keep us updated tomorrow and we will all be here to try to help you get through the day. Sending you lots of hugs.
