Tapeworm segments look like rice. Dogs gets them from eating an infected flea. Disinfecting your home will not kill them. Using an insecticide on your yard and home will. Ask your vet about what works best in your area. You will want to vacuum thoroughly, wash and dry all bedding. Then treat the house, yard and dog.
When she is better, Comfortis is a great flea preventive. Vet rx only.

Bella takes her heartworm pills, has been through all the rounds of shots etc and she still managed to get them. They are likely in the soil from other pets and wildlife. Just be sure to give her the meds and follow up with another fresh sample.

Heart worm meds are not effective on tapeworms. Check for yourself, read the box label.
Tapes come from eating an infected flea.

I guess the better way to describe the evidence on her fur is like a sesame seed, but a little rounder. They are also smaller.
I am going to try to wash EVERY LITTLE THING today and over the weekend. I feel so bad for her. She's so young and I already let THIS happen. |

Please also remember to treat yourself.
If you have pets you will have internal parasites. Just how it goes. I am out right now. Will post what my Naturopathic Dr uses when I get home later this afternoon.

Comfortis keeps fleas under control. Spookie and Kris are on it. We don't have fleas, they are year round here.

please dont be so hard on yourself. I was mortified when I saw that little white moving thing... and TWICE.... I have changed Bentleys flea prevention several times, he was on Frontline when this happened the first time, then on Vectra, and got it again. Now on Advantage.....
I have done my research and asked the Vet. It is 100% from fleas, even if you have the best protection if you take the darling out of his normal environment he is prone to get some fleas on him, then scratch and bite at it and bam, all it takes is one little flea..... well thats what the vet said.... My parents live in the country on a few acres, so it is impossible to treat their yard, and since we visit often, I have just become diligent with flea meds and flea baths..... Medicine took care of it.. Castrex (sp?) and take again 3 weeks later... |

Goodness! Do not panic, and do not feel bad! It's tapeworms and it happens, it's not your fault. Heartworm meds won't prevent or kill tapeworms, they get it from ingesting a flea which happens, even if they're on flea preventative! So easy to treat with the medication your vet gave you and she'll be fine. Probably won't be the last time! We've been through it too. FYI tapeworms usually do not show up in a stool sample so if you ever see it again, just take the "rice" in to show the vet, don't waste your money on a fecal (like I did!). No worries!
