We had to put our 15 year old maltese-poodle down several weeks ago. It was very hard. He was a good boy and a pleasure to be with.
Now, our 2 year old maltese has not been the same since. He sleeps a lot and only eats evey 2 days or so. He was always very independant, but now seems needy. Do dogs get depressed and is he missing his buddy? I plan to take to take him to the vet, but was curious to eveyone's thoughts on this. P. S. We took out Christmas picture before we lost Sami. Here he is with his younger maltese brother ,Spencer. |

First, I am sorry for your loss of Sami. It is so hard when you lose a furbaby but would also think that Spenser is definately missing Sami and not sure why he isn't around anymore. He is sad that his buddy isn't here and certainly doesn't understand why. Such a difficult thing for the whole family to deal with. So sorry!!

Dogs grieve... Just like people.
This is probably grief .... he will be sad. They mourn losses.... and they go through phases of it just like people. I'm so sorry for your loss ![]() Would it be possible to get another dog?

Yes, many species of animals grieve. I've seen it in my own dogs & even my cockatiels. The pain of missing their companions is every bit as real as our own grief at the loss of this family member.

I'm so sorry about Sami!
I agree with what the others said and I've seen it too with several of my pets over the years. It's sad watching them be sad but time and lots of love helps. |

Grieving is tough whether human or pet....but its very real. I know what your saying that you feel its too soon. When I lost my first furbaby I was devastated but only had her. I couldn't stand not having one to love so I did get another in a couple of months but everyone is different. Your furbaby is sad as are you. When your ready you will think about getting another. Hugs to you!

I'm sorry to hear the passing of Sami. It is truely hard to cope with a loss of a love family member. Our loving pet is our family and it is heart trenching to go thru the experience. My thoughts and condolences are with you.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. I guess it just takes time. I will take Spencer in to the vet and have him double checked. In the meantime, we have been showering him with attention. And, one thing that I told my wife was to not be so depressed over the loss of our dog. I think the little guy picks up on this and that could affect him as well. They are pretty good on reading us, probably better than we will ever know.
