Default Behaviour Question (saying hello?)

This is weird question, but I wondered what this really means in dog world. Sometimes if they are separated, they will do a real fast sniff of each others private area--then they are off. And sometimes it's just one that does it. Are they saying hello or what?

I don't know the answer but Dewey must be saying "Hello" to everyone all day long!! He is always sniffing someone's backside!! When Hardy is away from Laurel and Violet for a time, they don't sniff him, they gang up in him!! He seems to know that they, will because he just stands there kind of looking like"OK just gang up on me already, and get it over with! "LOL

Haha, yes they are saying hello. I've read since dogs identify via smell and since genitals have unique strong smells that's how they check someone out and say hi.
