I came home half an hour ago to find Moon had torn apart a pack of Extra Dessert Delights Apple Pie flavored gum! I have no idea where he'd found it, but he did! I checked the website to see if the gum had xylitol in it, and it does not.
Here are the ingredients per the website: NGREDIENTS: SORBITOL, GUM BASE, GLYCEROL, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS; LESS THAN 2% OF: HYDROGENATED STARCH HYDROLYSATE, SOY LECITHIN, ASPARTAME-ACESULFAME, MANNITOL, CITRIC ACID, ASPARTAME, MALIC ACID, SUCRALOSE, ACESULFAME K, COLORS (YELLOW 5 LAKE, BLUE 1 LAKE), BHT (TO MAINTAIN FRESHNESS). Should I be worried? I can't remember how much gum was in the pack originally. I believe that I had three pieces of the gum before. There was a lot of gum still left when I came home. I think at worst he had three pieces. Moon is hopping up and down like his usual 9 am playful self, but I can't help but be concerned! I'm not quite sure he even ate the gum, though, because I would have definitely smelled it on him. It's a strong gum and he would reek of it. In addition, my little hero also managed to find a mechanical pencil while I was gone and chew the eraser of that as well as a bit of the plastic and graphite. ![]() I was SO senseless this morning leaving stuff around. No idea what I was thinking. He's never done this kind of stuff before. I'm very scared for him now! Should little woof be okay?

A stick and a half of sugarfree gum can be toxic for a ten pound dog. Please call your vet immediately.
Hepatic Necrosis The other reaction associated with xylitol in the canine body is actual destruction of liver tissue. How this happens remains unknown but the doses of xylitol required to produce this effect are much higher than the hypoglycemic doses described above. Signs take longer to show up (typically 8-12 hours) and surprisingly not all dogs that experience hepatic necrosis, will have experienced hypoglycemia first. A lucky dog experiences only temporary illness but alternatively, a complete and acute liver failure can result with death following. Internal hemorrhage and inability of blood to clot is commonly involved. How Much Xylitol Is Dangerous? The hypoglycemic dose of xylitol for dogs is considered to be approximately 0.1 grams per kilogram of body weight (about 0.045 grams per pound). A typical stick of gum contains 0.3 to 0.4 grams of xylitol, which means that a 10 lb dog co 01 Xylitol Poisoning - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company!

My Laurel gobbled up a piece up a piece of gum a while ago, and we went to the pet emergency. They induced vomiting and she was fine. I'd take your little one to the vet now, as it seems like Moon got several pieces!

I would call the vet right away, I do not see anything that is harmful to dogs in small quantaties, a vet will know much better. As a precation, probably they will recommend a touch of hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, to get the plastic and grafit up. It could damage the bowels. It is good there is no xylatol. I would also call the gum's 800 number to double check the ingrediants. If it contains xylatol, it is a definite emergency. Good luck, and take a deep breath.
