As long as it's always available (except maybe bedtime) and he's peeing enough, I'm sure he's getting enough water. Another sign is that his mouth and eyes are moist.

We have found that having a "water fountain" for our fur children is a very good way to keep their water handy. The best one we had was the Drinkwell 360 that had up to 5 little spouts that they could drink from. It held about 2 gallons and kept the water flowing all the time. The water went through a charcoal filter and we cleaned it weekly. All 8 of our furbabies seemed to enjoy the fresh water. It bit the dust after 5 years and we purchased a different one--don't like it as good but it still provides them with fresh water.

If you leave water out, he will drink. Almost all dogs will go for water when they need it. If he stays inside mostly where it isn't hot, he probably won't need a whole lot. If he is wee weeing 4 or 5 times a day, he is probably getting enough.
