How much water should a Maltese need per day? I've finally (i think) found a food Sammy will eat and it's dry, and dry is how he will eat it only (fusspot, even though it takes a while as he brings it in piece by piece and eats it that way) so the paranoia in me is now coming out about how much water he should be having and how much he is drinking. We have always had water issues and it's taken him until a week or two ago to even drink water on his own since we had him - he's now 5 months.

Hi Laura,
OMG, Sammy is so cute! Is he mixed? Sorry I can't help on any tips with water but I'm sure others will soon as they see your post! When our boy Biscuit don't feel like drinking water, my wife would use a syringe to force water into his mouth. LOL Please post new picture of Sammy! :-)

Yes he's maltese x shihtzhu - think he's more Maltese though
He does drink water I'm just want to make sure he's getting enough, not sure how much he should actually be having. I googled this morning and it seems to say that when they're so small they don't need a huge amount but me being me wants to be sure. 1 oz per pound in weight?

I think if the water is easily accessible to him, he'll drink when he's thirsty. I don't keep track of how much mine drink, but I'm always filling their water bowl!!

My Zoe use to be the same way and never drank a lot of water. I wouldnt worry but always make sure it's cool enough and accessible. He is a cutie!!

no such thing as being overly paranoid when it comes to these little ones. Bigger dogs can handle things the little ones can't. I am constantly checking every aspect of my Louie dog. His water gets replaced 3 times a day with fresh since both he and Miss Boo my cat share the water bowl. Louie also only eats dry food. I've tried canned and he doesn't seem to care for anything he can't carry away and eat in the living room. One thing that has helped me is we do play time a few times a day since Louie loves to play fetch in the house I'll keep throwing the ball until he stops and walks in to get a drink and this seems to work most of the time.
If you think you are paranoid you should see what Louie goes through on a daily basis! Every day I check his eyes, ears, nose, butt, his entire coat looking for mats and skin color. I also gently press all over his body looking for any sore spots. I also track sleeping habits, potty habits and how active he is. If anything seems even slightly different from normal I am on here asking questions.

Lucky uses pee pads and has access to water 24/7. We have a bowl in the main living area and one in the bedroom. He will get out of bed in the middle of the night and I hear slurping. He is a finicky eater and I keep kibble out all the time, too. He will not overeat his kibble, but every once and a while, he will get out of bed and will eat some kibble in the mifdle of the night.

Sophie's never had problems with wetting her bed or needing to get up in the middle of the night, so the only time she doesn't have access to water is bed time. I don't keep track of how much she drinks, I figured if she's thirsty she'll drink, just like we would.
