I didn't think Mia was eating enough, so I took a handful of her BB dry food and held it out to her while we were on the sofa and she gobbled it right up. She ate handful after handful until she was satisfied. Now, she waits for me to do this. How do I get her to eat out of her bowl?
Also, I was wondering if there was a wet food that is good for her that I could switch her to. That way she could eat twice a day and I don't have to keep worrying about picking her food up when she isn't eating because of the cats. They eat hers as much as they eat theirs. I keep theirs up off the floor because I don't want her to eat it.... |

We finally bought a cat condo climbing thing and keep Smudge's food on the top shelf! Ollie loves her food and she likes his! My grandkids like to hand feed Ollie, but I just put his food down and he eats it. He is fed twice a day.

Have you checked the amount according to the package that she should be eating? It is pretty surprising how little a tiny dog needs. Maybe she has enough.

Addie sometimes will eat better if I hand feed her. But when she's hungry, she will eat from her dish. I forgot who said it on SM, but someone said handfeeding isn't spoiling. It just lets them know you love them.

If you take a little wet dog food and mix it in the kibble she will gobble it up. On occasion when I don't have time to homecook I feed Zoe Fromm (canned). Its a good food and not an overload of protein.....but there are a lot of good canned foods to choose from. Good luck, I am sure she will eat out of her bowl with wet food in it.

I love feeding her by hand....I think its sweet. I just sit her with my hand out and she eats up. She stops when she is satisfied. But, I may not always be able to sit here and do that, and I don't want her to go hungry because she won't eat out of her bowl.

I think it is sweet, and it really makes you feel like a mommy. I am sorry to say, that I also think it is asking for trouble. It is a good thing to be the source of all things good to your baby, but I think you are treading dangerous waters to be the source of persuasion. It is my never humble opinion that dogs should be really happy to receive food from their loving caretakers. I also believe that they benefit from having to do some small thing...such as sit...to earn it. Begging your dog to eat, in my arrogant opinion, sets a really bad example. You may encourage your dog to be a picky eater. One thing I do agree with specialists in canine behavior, is that dogs need to earn their rewards...just as we need to earn our food, our house, and the money with which to purchase the best food we can for our babies. Begging them to eat is a lie...the truth is they should be grateful for plentiful good food...as should we.

I agree with Barbara- Fromm is a great USA company. I haven't tried their canned but I really like the company. I've been trying out dehydrated food (The Honest Kitchen) with Obi and it works well as a kibble topper too once rehydrated. It's the only dog food that earned the "human grade" title. I think most dogs would prefer to be handfed if they had a choice. You can handfeed her for a few pieces and then put pieces of kibble on the floor by her bowl. My dog likes to take his kibble and eat if off the floor sometimes! She will learn- just don't give in!Also, I think the type of bowl makes a big difference. I use a very tiny sauce dish and he eats well from it. I think some dogs don't like the noises certain bowls make. play around with it and see what works. it took me like 4-5 different bowls to figure it out.
