I will never allow Leila outside without me right beside her. We have lots of hawks that fly around our house. I even found one sitting on the rail on my front porch one day. I couldn't believe it was really a hawk that close to the front door so I took a pic and sent it to my hubby. He texted back that it was a hawk and was surprised too. One day a couple of years ago, I saw a fox coming up our backyard. Our yard is fenced in, but there's an incline and the back part of the yard is wooded. As soon as I opened the back door and yelled something, he went running back into the woods. Our HOA though recently sent out an email warning about a fox that has been seen walking up and down the street and said to be cautious in case it is rabid. These are some of the reasons why Leila is being paper trained. I will take her outside to play but I'm right there with her and she will stay on a leash. I still remain cautious of the hawks around because a friend of mine was walking in their driveway with her granddaughter and a baby chick that she got for Easter. A hawk swooped down and picked up the chick with them right there!

I saw one a couple years ago in broad daylight, standing in the middle of my driveway.
I picked Tiffany up, kept my distance, and yelled because I heard making noise usually scares them away. Must have worked because it ran away, but I was totally scared.

Oo walking down the street, reminds me of the rabid dog in "To Kill A Mockingbird" I'd be on the look out all the time!

There is a spray you can get at Petco/Petsmart.... I have one it's like Mace... but it's for wildlife and stray dogs
We have coyotes and packs of wild dogs around us... so I walk with spray just in case. Never have had to use it, but nice to know I have it. The coyote here are not afraid of people!

Please don't underestimate how bold coyotes can be. One of our members lost her Max to a coyote several years ago. He was snatched right outside her front door.

I was walking the mailbox early, i.e. dark early, one morning recently with Tanner on a leash, Kelsey in my arms, and my IG running around when a coyote howled very close to me. Well when he started, all of 'em joined in. Talk about something that will chill you to the bone. So now the dogs stay in the house & I am armed when I walk to the mailbox.
BTW, there is a roll-bar device you can put on the top of your fence called a coyote bar that is supposed to prevent them from getting in the yard.

Courtney, i got an email from my homeowners association yesterday saying that three coyotes had been sighted on Brookwood (coming into my subdivision) in broad daylight. I'm between Oakwood Rd and Seven Bridges so I would imagine these coyotes are all part of the same group as the one you saw.
Be careful especially after dark!

Maggie we live on Oakwood, we must live closer than we thought! They may be.. My neighbor has seen one lone coyote around our bldg quite a bit, so hopefully it's just one, not a pack.. Might need to dig out my pepper spray..
I'm not super worried bc. I always have them on leash, but have read accounts of them not being scared of humans... Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App |
