I was looking at the site for our county animal shelter, and just out of curiosity, I decided to do a search for "small, white, any gender, 1 year+ dogs"--I actually do search fairly often for small dogs in general. If I see one that looks especially adorable, I tend to "keep an eye on them" to make sure they get adopted. Anyway, after all this talk about where to get a Maltese, I decided to add "white" to my criteria and see what I got. Take at look at this beauty!
http://www.petharbor.com/pet.asp?uaid=LSVG.A685689 Just an example of the kinds of dogs you can find at the local shelter. Sometimes the beautiful dog like this is lurking underneath a bunch of dirty, matted hair. But sometimes they are just sitting their, already beautified, and waiting for a home. Oh gosh, Mia's cute.
![]() I love the rescues and shelter Maltese and can't imagine them in shelters with all the larger noisier dogs around them and poor conditions at many.

We got Lucy from this shelter. The shelter, in terms of how they keep the animals, is really quite nice (for a shelter). It was recently rebuilt and redesigned. Trust me, when I first went there I was very apprehensive, this being Las Vegas, and this shelter being the county shelter. I was surprised. Each dog has it's own private kennel and can't see the dogs on either side of them. It's well kept and the dogs seem to be fairly well cared for (thanks to a LOT of volunteers). They had very nice "fake" grass fenced in areas where you could take the dog to interact off-leash with your family and/or other dogs. Problem is it IS a kill shelter. But I think they give the dogs a LOT of time, and then some of the rescues and no-kill shelters take them. A lot of the rescues here, though, pull from LA shelters, because THOSE are horrible. Little fluffy dogs like Mia usually are adopted quickly though. Thank God. I"ll be watching her.
