Hi all
I am about to become a maltese owner. I have found a perfect breeder, who has a litter of four puppies. Two girls, two boys. Now, we wanna get a boy, but we cant choose between the two. They are very different from each other, in looks, but we can not find a difference in their behavior, neither can the breeder. They are both very happy and outgoing. The behavior and health are the most important thing to us, but they both seem very healthy and happy. The big difference are their looks and size. The small boy weighs about 2 pounds at nine weeks old, and the other boy, the big one, weighs about 3,2 pounds at nine weeks old. The parents weighs about 5,5 pounds, and have a good pedigree. I think the big boy is going to weigh more than the standard for a Maltese. We already have a dog, he is a Bichon frise mix, he is 2 years old, and weighs about 15 pounds. He is very sweet and calm with other dogs. Now, based on these information, which puppy would you most likely choose? As i said before, we cant see any difference in their behavior at all, they are both really welcoming and playful puppies, so we actually have to choose based on appearance and size. |

Seeing that you already have a Bichon that weighs around 15 lbs I would probably go for the bigger fluff.

I agree with going with the larger boy so they can play. I have 3 maltese, my sister has a Bichon. All thrre on mine play with my sister's dog, but we do have to closely monitor as two of mine are much smaller than the Bichon.

I have a coton that weighs close to 15 pounds and he is just fine with my 7.5 pound malt. But he is a very gentle boy. I have had bichons in the past and they were very gentle.
I think you will be fine with either puppy.

I think you will be alright with either. I was worried about my 5 pound malt with my 11 pound Yorkie, but it's the 5 pounder that is rougher than the Yorkie!! As long as they have time to get used to each other, and not left alone when the puppy is small, they'll get used to each other and be fine . I would just take time allowing the puppy to be with the bigger dog.

Thank you very much for your answers. My Bichon frise's best friend is a pomeranian, he weighs 6,4 pounds, and they play very well together. My Bichon is very careful with him.
I must admit, when i decided to get a maltese, I chose the breed, mainly because of the mentality and characteristics, because I could easily meet its needs, but also because of the size. However, I chose to get another dog, as company for my current dog. I have no real reason, but I would just like a Maltese who is "Maltese sized" However, I obviously not want them to have a hard time playing properly together.I think it's a difficult choice, but I must admit that I probably like the little boy best, because he will be within the breed standard. But, if it is a bit selfish to think that, I do not know: ( However, I am glad to hear that some of you, who have two dogs, with a relatively large weight difference, still plays well together anyway

Gus is almost 20 pounds and Grace is teeters between 5-6 pounds.... they play great together
![]() I think you should go and sit with the puppies... Just the two males. I think if you sit with them and have some quiet moments you will know which puppy is the right one One of those two baby boys will choose you guys .... Not the other way around LOL
