Default Maltese - Yorkie

I was just watching ABC news my three words and one of the pictures was a Yorkie and Maltese curled up sleeping atop each other. It got me wondering, are there behavioural/personality differences between the two breeds. When we were in puppy class Luck always played with a Yorkie. I know a number of you have both breeds. Do they normally get along well together? How are they different/alike?

I researched both breeds before getting Miss Khloee. Strictly speaking about personality, I decided on maltese because they are supposed to be the calmer of the two breeds. Maltese love playing but are also equally happy to be lap dogs, where as yorkies want to play a lot! Also, of the two, yorkies are more prone to being "yappers." I will say my best friend has a yorkie (Lucy) and she and Khloee exhibit the above general descriptions to a T. BUT I also think it really depends on the individual dog and how you raise them; I have seen super calm yorkies and really hyper maltese. So after typing all this I guess at the end of the day its the luck of the draw

My SIL has a yorkie and she is not a yapper. Ive actually never heard her dog bark. She is also very mellow. She's not much interested in playing and
mostly just likes to lay around.

I have both breeds...two Malts and a Yorkie. Mine are very similar in personality. However the Yorkie, the smallest of the three and a male, is very territorial when it comes to his toys and his Mommy. Axel will carry as many toys as his tiny mouth will hold to keep the other two from getting them. He will also nip at anyone who gets too close to me, especially if I'm in my office. His daddy, my SO has learned to approach with caution if I'm at my desktop computer. Funny thing is, Axel was supposed to be his Daddy's dog.

My Yorkie is MUCH easier to groom although he has to be bathed more often because his hair is more oily.

I hope to add a female Yorkie to my crew some day. I love both breeds.

Being a past owner of the two breeds and a present owner of the two, my opinion is , it depends on the dog! Violet;Yorkie) hardly ever barks, is loving and playful and very intelligent. Hardy(Yorkie) is a barker. Probably the most intelligent of all of mine. Yorkies love to be with you, but Maltese love to be on your lap. The malts acts every bit as much as a terrier as the Yorkies. They get along very well together . Laurel and Hardy has been best buddies since Hardy came and now Dewey plays with Hardy. The biggest difference that I've noticed is the Yorkies LOVE to eat, and they eat fast!! Yorkies are much easier to groom. I love them both and couldn't imagine not having the two breeds together!

I love the little possessive personality. My Luck tends to possessive also.

Maybe your Yorkie hasn't looked in the mirror and since all he sees are Maltese, thinks he's a Maltese! Hee-hee, just kidding!

I too believe that individuals are individuals, though it seems that internet research generally portrays Malts as the quieter of the two breeds with Yorkies more high energy. But I'm sure there are quiet and high-energy dogs in both breeds. You just have to go visit any potential pups and sit on the floor and get to know the individual dog before deciding to bring them home.

Watch the Malts play, and check out Hardy!

too funny. The toys look like my house, and I only have one. Were those rugs or reusable pee pads flying across the floor?
