So I'm taking Leila and Wilber to be train. They are 4 month old and I heard this is the best time to do so.
I am debating between petco and petsmart... Or any other affordable pet training in NYC, NJ or CT.. Thank you Sent from Petguide.com Free App |

Mia is 2 1/2, but I'm still considering taking her to Petco for training just for "Come", "sit", "Stay"....the basics just for added control. Have you checked into what they charge? How long each lesson lasts? Just curious.

Petco and Petsmart are ok, I would google dog trainers in your area to see what else you can find. Personally I think a local dog trainer would be better, and in my case we have trainers in the area that are less expensive or only slightly more than petco or petsmart. If there is no one in your area then petco or petsmart would be fine. I'm a fan of petco personally

I never went to a puppy class. I think it is important in terms of socializing more than the training. I have a book that includes a video that is very helpful. It wouldn't hurt to get a good book too.

I'm not wild about Petco or Petsmart for classes. Met some of the trainers and unimpressed with their abilities and formal training. I took Tyler to Follow My Lead in the city and the class was run well and lots of attention. there were only about 7 dogs and there was a trainer and often one or two assistants so everyone got a lot of individual attention. The woman's name is Phyllis and she gave out lots of info sheets to keep and when I told her Tyler had been in a puppy socialization class where the dogs were huge and frightening to him, she put us in a class primarily with small dogs. You won't find anything like that at PetCo or PetSmart.

Contact your local ASPCA .... I did this when considering training for Grace. I was very impressed with the trainer, her knowledge of toy breeds, and how she ran the puppy class.
It was also MUCH cheaper than petsmart/petco -- PM & PC seem cheaper but they rob you blind... Plus the majority of "my puppy was traumatized in class" posts are from PM or PC training classes.... Don't do it.
