Changing foods for the boys ???

Helo and Boomer have both been scratching a lot with the Halo Spot Stew dry food. I made the mistake and switched to Merricks Cowboy Cookout which contains grains as well. They liked the food but they scratched even harder. I tried Grandma Lucy's Artisan, but they didn't want to eat it. My fault I did not introduce it to them slowly. I just made a small portion and wanted them to try it. I have Dr. Harvey's Veg-to-Bowl, but did not try it yet. I have to buy oil. I now have EVO. They both like it, but boy are they gassy! Is this normal? Is it because I am changing foods? Should I add something to the food that will help them digest, or do I need to keep on trying foods?

I'm in the same boat too as I too want to switch over. There are so many choices out there, it's overwhelming. I wonder if you could order some small sample bags, before you buy any big ones?

I really don't like Evo and would never feed it to my dogs. I've seen too many dogs with health problems after switching to Evo. The problem coincided with starting the food and was solved with stopping it. The dogs all had elevated kidney values. I don't think it has to do with being high protein....i think there is something about Evo in particular.

Rita, have you talked with your Vet. about your dog's itching? The reason I asked is that only about 10-20% of canine allergies are food related. There can be many other reasons for their itching including flea bite allergies and inhalant allergies.

My malt Karli has allergies and just itches in the Summer. Last Summer the Vet. gave her one steroid shot and she was fine for a year. She's itching really bad this Summer (literally head to tail) and the Vet. is trying her on a couple of months of Temaril P, an oral medication which has a low dose of prednisolone and an antihistamine in it.

I stopped the EVO yesterday and started them on Natural Instinct Lamb Formula. I also made a appointment with a vet that specializes in food nutrition. When I made the appointment the first question the receptionist asked was did I contact my vet. I did not. I just thought it was a food allergy. The vet is going to look them over and discuss the next steps we should take. I want to make sure I am providing the best and right now I feel I am not doing this with changing their food so much. Helo looks like he has gained some weight.

Do you have any stores in your area that sells dog food besides Pet Smart and Pet Co? I have a couple in my area Pabby's Pet Pantry, Cutters Mills, Lick Your Chops and a few others that have been a real help to me. They all have great staff and provide samples to some of the foods they sell. They will also take back and refund your money if you buy a large bag and your fluff does not like it.

If the stores are too far away from you I could get samples and send them to you. Let me know what you would like to try. The samples are small bags from the manufacturer of the products and are sealed.
