Frequently Asked Questions

Questions regarding grooming your Maltese dog.

How often should I brush my Maltese?

A Maltese in a full coat should be brushed every one to two days and any other coat should be brushed every two to three days.

How often should I bathe my Maltese?

A good schedule for a Maltese would be a bath every seven to ten days.

Can I use my own shampoo on my Maltese?

No!  Products designed for humans are acidic and will eventually cause damage to your Maltese’s coat.

How should I remove matted hair?

Gently separate mats with your fingertips.  For large impact mats, you may have to spray it with a detangler or conditioning oil until it is saturated.  Pull the mat apart with your fingers then use a comb to loosen the individual hairs.  Never try to remove the entire mat with a comb or brush.  It will hurt your dog and will result in hair loss.

What other areas should attention be given?

The hair between the pads of the foot can grow fast and will tend to mat.  Ignored, the mats will increase in size and spread the pads further apart.  You should also clip the toenails every week.

What about my dogs’ teeth?

Dogs should have their teeth brushed everyday to avoid plaque buildup.  This is especially important for older dogs.

What is the MOM formula for tear stains?

Mix equal volumes of Milk of Magnesia and peroxide(10 volume/3%), then use corn starch to make a good paste.  Apply and work well into the stained area and let day overnight.  Wash out and condition well.  Do this for several days until stain is gone, skipping a day or two between applications if possible.

What about the yellow “pee” stains on their feet?

A solution of  50 percent liquid Woolite and 50 percent human hair peroxide(20 volume),diluted 50percent with water.  Apply this mixture to the stained area and let remain of three to five minutes.  Wash out, shampoo and condition well.
