Default My heart is breaking

Ran across a video of Sasha, our Maltese..the day we sent her to the bridge..She had doggie dementia, she was so "lost", she was pacing frantically that last day and crying like the devil was chasing her.. We tried to console her..We couldn't tell if she was in pain..It was a crying bark, like we never heard before..
She was 15.. Body was solidly healthy but her mind was gone..

Now I lay here crying...thinking of Emily.. her little body is so thin, hair is thin.. all the hair on her tail is gone...She doesn't look like a Maltese..
She still wants to be held and loved..her mind is good, but her body is 16...

Emily was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in April and we thought she only had a few weeks.. it's been hard.. we've kept her going, she lost all her hair but some of it has grown back, but thin.. We have her checked and vet says she's doing pretty well,considering...

She eats as much as Amber our cocker spaniel but she's so thin..

It hurts my heart..It's so hard, she's our last Maltese baby and we're both having a hard time, letting her go...

All the way home, last December, when Sasha went to the bridge..I cried.." I killed my baby" was all I could think ... I know she was suffering , inside her mind..

Emily's mind is still pretty good, she does get stuck under the kitchen chairs or in corners, since her eyes are bad...

How do you let your 16 year old baby go?
We still have Amber, who's will be 16 in March...she's responding pretty well to the Adequan shots.. Sassy is still hanging in, on her 4 heart meds..

It hurts so bad, when your babies leave you...

I've been "lucky" that there have been clear signs it's been time to put all of my previous babies to sleep. I had zero regrets that I did it too early or too late. It seems like from what I read, most people regret waiting too long. If Emily is still eating and enjoying cuddling and isn't in pain, perhaps she's not quite there yet. But if she is in pain, or is sick, then it's probably time.

I hate that we all have to go through this. Wish our dogs would live as long as people

Michelle, my heart breaks for you! You have not had an easy life---our pups are the ones who stand w/us in need. They seem to feel our pain & they know how to wiggle their way into our hearts. This makes it all the harder to let them go.
I don't have any advice except just watch & wait & see when they have more bad than good days. I have made a commitment (while they are still healthy) to not let them suffer if there is a terminal disease. I won't have them "treated" if it is hopeless, but I will spend my last $$ IF there is hope of recovery. I don't want them to suffer for my sake.
So you are right, it is never easy, but they are worth every struggle we encounter---offering unconditional love. Just enjoy each day for now---"tomorrow is another day."

It is so difficult. With Lucky it was so sudden, I had no time to prepare. Their lives are so short compared to ours, we know for most of them, it will be our decision to let them go. As tough as it is we need to be thinking about what is best for them, even if it brings us pain. Having said that if Emily's quality of life is good and she continues to enjoy life and does not suffer, you need to prepare for day but don't need to make an immediate decision. Sandi is right - enjoy every day with them.

We take her every week and vet says her heart is strong, pulse in her back legs is good.. abdomen is soft..She didnt' sense any pain..the usual stiffness of arthritis in one leg..Otherwise she seems happy and runs( as much as a 16 year old can run)..She wants love and cuddles and we all pull couch time in the evenings watching tv..

I know with Duchess, we took her in and they said it was time for her to go..we didn't even expect it..

Rosie and Buster went in their sleep..

Rylee was the hardest one,, he went in my arms... a couple hours after we got back from the vet..

Emily is the last of our Maltese..

Michelle, My heart goes out to you. In my own grief I am at a loss of words. I feel your heartbreak and will pray for you and precious Emily.

Oh Michelle, embrace the moments. Every second is such a precious gift. Whether it’s human or fluff, love is love. We cannot truly prepare for loss, but we are protected in our grief. You are beautiful and brave, trust yourself.... you’ll know when it’s time. Hugs.

Agree with your comments completely. It's never easy to let our babies go, but what is best for them must come first.

Michelle I’m so sorry. It’s hard when our babies get old for one reason or another.
I will keep her and you in my prayers.
